An Appa

This is a loose concept, more of an idea I keep coming back to than a finished plan.

The Idea

Something about Appalachian Christmas food feels worth writing down. The regional recipes, the folk traditions, the way mountain holiday cooking carries so much history in such simple ingredients. I've been turning the idea over for a while: a book that pairs recipes with the stories behind them, not a food blog, more like pulling up a chair at someone's grandmother's table.

Cornbread in cast iron. Molasses stack cakes. Old-fashioned drinks and slow-cooked things that take all day. The Ohio River Valley has a distinct flavor of Christmas that doesn't get much attention, and that absence feels like an opening.

Where It Stands

Right now this exists as collected notes, some recipe drafts, early layout sketches, and a placeholder site at cookbook.barrycarver.com. Nothing is locked in. The concept is still loose on purpose, I want to let it develop naturally rather than force it into a shape too early.

It may become a proper book. It may stay a long-running side project. Either way, it feels like something worth exploring slowly.
